Cụm từ "turn the other cheek" (dịch: "đưa bên má còn lại") xuất phát từ Kinh Thánh, cụ thể trong Phúc Âm Mát-thêu 5:39, một phần của Bài Giảng Trên Núi của Chúa Giê-su: “Còn Thầy, Thầy bảo anh em: đừng chống cự người ác, trái lại, nếu bị ai vả má bên phải, thì hãy giơ cả má bên trái ra nữa.” Cụm từ này nhằm hướng tới (bao gồm nhưng không giới hạn) các thông điệp như sống khoan dung, từ bi và đối xử tử tế ngay cả khi bị xúc phạm hay đối xử bất công. Các con chiên được khuyến khích sống hòa giải, tin tưởng vào sự công bằng của Thiên Chúa thay vì tự mình tìm cách trả đũa.
