Analysis/Judgment Motions
Chương 4. Motions · Part B: Case Building
Motions that evaluate phenomena, policies, narratives, or actions as they actually exist or would likely exist, without inventing hypothetical models. The UADC handbook calls this family Value Judgment Motions (UADC 2025 Handbook, section 3.2.2).
- TH Supports (THS) / TH Opposes (THO) / TH Believes That (THBT): Focuses on evaluating the subject at the current point in time against the most likely alternative. Teams cannot 'model in' their ideal ways the phenomenon operates.
- TH Regrets (THR): Evaluates whether the world would have been better if the phenomenon never existed. It signals a debate about history and long-run consequences. Proposition must develop a plausible counterfactual.
- TH Prefers (THP): Compares X to the status quo, X to Y, or a world with X vs without X.
- TH Predicts (WUDC): treated as THBT. Any other undefined phrasing is treated as THS or THO, whichever is semantically closer to the motion wording.
