A burden refers to what a team needs to prove, defend, or establish to support its side, given the wording of the motion. It defines the scope of what a team is responsible for demonstrating and contributes to the judges' assessment. Opponents cannot create a burden merely by asserting it, and failure to meet a burden does not by itself imply an automatic loss in BP.
