Rebuttal refers to responding to the material that is provided by the other side. Rebuttal can either be defensive or offensive. Defensive rebuttal refers to rebuilding an argument by responding to the rebuttal offered against it by the opposing team, while offensive rebuttal refers to responding to the arguments provided by the other team. The line between defensive and offensive rebuttal can become blurred later in the debate as both teams will frequently naturally clash, meaning that defensive and offensive rebuttals are often happening simultaneously later in the debate.

Crucially, rebuttal is not the same as constructing another argument and then weighing it against the arguments made by the other team. It is also not constructing parallel reasons to reach the same endpoint without touching the original analysis. This describes direct rebuttal in the WSDC glossary. BP and AP also credit engagement showing opposing material to be irrelevant, insufficient, or comparatively less important; rebuttal need not completely disprove a claim (WUDC 2027 Manual, section 2.5; UADC 2025 Handbook, section 4.5).

  • WUDC wording: rebuttal is any material that engages directly with the other side's arguments, showing them to be wrong, irrelevant, comparatively unimportant, insufficient, or inferior. It need not be labelled "rebuttal" and can occur anywhere in a speech. It is not a special kind of argument.
