Characterisation
Chương 5. Case Building · Part B: Case Building
Characterisation refers to grounding the debate by explaining what it looks like in the real world. Teams will characterise the actors, context, or how certain systems work. This is often done in set-up, but should be incorporated throughout the speech. Characterisation supports the endpoint a team is proving, so it must be tied back to why it supports their side.
- Actors: Explaining context, interests, or capabilities. (e.g., Characterising drug users as victims of stigma rather than criminals).
- Context: Explaining current events or trends. (e.g., Characterising the rise of right-wing populism).
- Systems: Explaining how systems are designed and function. (e.g., Why immigration systems are currently restrictive).
