StanceA stance refers to the general position that a team is taking in the debate.
Status QuoThe current state of affairs in the world before any proposed policy is implemented.
CharacterisationCharacterisation refers to grounding the debate by explaining what it looks like in the real world.

BP Formal Requirement: The Member of Government/Member of Opposition must extend the debate with material not previously contributed by their side. This can include new arguments, rebuttal, analysis, examples, characterisation, or weighing. Judges credit the Closing Half for contributions beyond their Opening team's material; merely having an extension does not establish a win over Opening. Closing must normally remain consistent with Opening, subject to the rare exceptions in WUDC 2027 Manual, section 2.11. For the informal WSDC usage, see Extension (WSDC).
